19th May was round 2 of the inaugural PDQ Newport Live Track Night of a new prestigious track racing Series at Geraint Thomas National Velodrome of Wales in Newport. BC points and big prize money is on offer for this race series, prizes kindly donated by our sponsors of this event Carbotech Ltd and 73 Degrees Bicycle Shop.

The racing on offer was Category B races and Masters 35yrs+. A fantastic first evening of racing in this series, certainly fast and furious races in both categories.
The variety of riders taking part was great to see. In the B category we had riders of different age groups from Junior to riders in their 60’s, a mix of genders and abilities. We had riders in the B cat who were riding their 2nd ever event up to seasoned racers in the Masters. This just shows that this series caters for such a wide range of riders, something for everybody.
Category B Races:
The first race off was the B Category 5km Scratch Race. Junior rider Ethan Storti of Lee Valley Youth Cycling broke away after 10 laps and the chase behind split the rest of the riders into 2 groups. Ethan really showed his strength and speed by lapping the field twice and going onto win the race. The bunch sprint for 2nd place was lead home by one of the oldest racers, Vincent Ellis of Velo Schills – Interbike ahead of Thomas Hogan of VeloVitesse.
The B Category Tempo race had 10 scoring laps, the first rider over the line scoring one point, and the winner is the rider with the most points. It was Ethan again who dominated by taking 5 of the points, Thoman Hogan scored 3, Vincent Ellis scored 1 and Michael Connor of PDQ Cycle Coaching scored 1.
The B Category 10km Points race saw Kevin Garland of PDQ Cycle Coaching break awayafter 4 laps and stay away to take the first sprint. It was Ethan who took the 2nd place with Vince Ellis in 3rd. Ethan attacked straight after the first sprint and Vince Ellis went with him. This duo worked well together and go on to lap the field and take 1st and 2nd in each of the remaining sprints. then dominate again taking 3 out of the 4 sprints. A break away after the 2nd sprint saw 3 riders go clear, Reuben Cox, Jon Wiggins and Vince Ellis of Velo Schils – Interbike RT. Kevin Garland’s 2nd place and 3rd in the final sprint was enough to secure him the 3rd spot on the podium.
Ethan took home 3 vouchers for 73 Degree Bike Shop, free entry into the next round. It’s a shame that Ethan did not enter the 1st round as it does place him down the series ranking into 7th place. John Berry of PDQ Cycle Coaching now leads the series with his consistent scoring, just 1 point overall ahead of Vincent Ellis. Kevin Garland is 3rd overall in the series. The series is still very much open and all to play for in the quest to snatch the £300 winners prize donated by Carbotech Ltd.
Masters Races:
The Masters 7.5km Scratch race was another fast and furious race from the offset. The pace was relentless on the front with Byron Hooper of PDQ Cycle Coaching attacking in the first 10 laps and stringing the bunch out, but didn’t manage to get away. His efforts were rewarded though as his team mate Anthony Neads attacked with 5 laps to go and the bunch were too tired to catch him. So it was a win for Antony Neads in the Scratch race taking home the 73 Degree Bike Shop voucher, with Oliver Hambrey of Team HUUB in 2nd place and Nicholas English of Areocoach in 3rd.
The Masters Elimination race was won by Oliver Hambrey, followed by Byron Hooper and Nicholas English.
The final race of the night was the Masters 15km Points race and it was certainly a cagey and tactical race. No laps were taken and it was all sprints from the group to take points. Byron and Oliver seemed to be marking each other, to the point they were in danger of losing contact with the bunch at one point! It was Oliver Hambrey though that took the victory in the Point race taking 3 of the sprint wins, and crucially the last double scoring sprint. Byron Hooper was 2nd, taking 2 sprint wins and 2nd on th efinal sprint. Nichol English was 3rd, scoring consistently 2nd or 3rd place in the sprints in the first 5 sprint.
Oliver Hambrey claimed 2 vouchers from 73 Degree Bike Shop and leads the overall series on 9 points. Nicholas English is 2nd overall with 18 points and David Mitchinson is close behind on 20 points. So all still to play for in the hunt for the series win and scoop the £300 winners prize donated by Carbotech Ltd.
