31st March was round 1 of the inaugural PDQ Newport Live Track Night of a new prestigious track racing Series at Geraint Thomas National Velodrome of Wales in Newport. BC points and big prize money is on offer for this race series, prizes kindly donated by our sponsors of this event Carbotech Ltd and 73 Degrees Bicycle Shop.

The racing on offer was Category B races and Masters 35yrs+. A fantastic first evening of racing in this series, certainly fast and furious races in both categories.

Category B Races:

The first race off was the B Category 5km Scratch Race. This was a fast race with Jon Wiggins Of PDQ Cycle Coaching determined to keep the pace high. Jon strung out the bunch but was not able to break clear and shake off his rivals. It came down to a bunch gallop in the end with Youth Abergavenny Road Club rider Reuben Cox taking the victory ahead of John Berry of PDQ Cycle Coaching and Jon Wiggins. This was a great race to watch, especially as for some riders this was their first experience of track racing.

The B Category 6-lap dash was short and sweet. It was fast so the pure sprinters were not able to take the spoils! Again it ended up being brought home by Abergavenny’s Reuben Cox ahead of John Berry and Alasdair Brown of PDQ Cycle Coaching.

The B Category 10km Points race saw Reuben Cox dominate again taking 3 out of the 4 sprints. A break away after the 2nd sprint saw 3 riders go clear, Reuben Cox, Jon Wiggins and Vince Ellis of Velo Schils – Interbike RT. This break worked well together and stayed away for the remainder of the race, sweeping up all the points along the way. It was Jon Wiggins and Vince Ellis that came around Reuben Cox in the final sprint for double points to deny him a clean sweep of sprint wins, but Reuben took the 3rd place across the line to secure him the overall victory in the Points race and also the overall victory on the night. Reuben took home 3 vouchers for 73 Degree Bike Shop, free entry into the next round and is now leading the series in contention for the £300 winners prize donated by Carbotech Ltd.

Masters Races:

The Masters 7.5km Scratch race was another fast and furious race from the offset. The pace was relentless on the front and the elastic began to snap for a few riders towards the end. It was Oliver Hambrey of Team HUUB that took the victory ahead of PDQ Cycle Coaching’s Byron Hooper and David Mitchinson of Cinnamon Cafe-Saddledrunk RT.

The Masters Unknown distance was a cagey affair with no-one wanting to gamble and take a flier on a short distance. So the bunch stayed together until the bell rang at 10 laps and it was Oliver Hambrey again taking the win proving too fast for everyone else in the sprint. 2nd was Nicolas English of Aerocoach and 3rd Gerry Bowditch of Reflex Racing.

The final race of the night and it did not disappoint, was the Masters 15km Points race. The first sprint was won by David Mitchinson ahead of PDQ Cycle Coaching’s Antony Neads and Nicholas English. David did not score in the next sprint and it was Byron Hooper who took maximum points and he replicated that again in the 3rd sprint as well. Oliver Hambrey took the 4th sprint with Byron not scoring any points that sprint. The 5th sprint was all to play for as some close scores, and it was Byron Hooper who took his 3rd sprint of the night. Going into the last sprint, Byron was leading on 16pts, David Mitchinson on 11pts, Oliver Hambrey on 10pts and Nicholas English on 8pts. Byron had a lead of 5 points but that could easily be overhauled with the double points offered for the last sprint, so it was all going to come down to the last sprint. David Mitchinson managed to slip the bunch with 2 laps to go while Byron was at the back of the bunch and couldn’t respond. David managed to stay away and Byron could only get 4pts for 3rd place, so David snatched the win at the very last and claim his 73 Degree Bike Shop voucher.

The series standings are led by Oliver Hambrey with his 2 wins and a 3rd place in the Points and he went home with 2 vouchers for 73 Degree Bike Shop, free entry into the next round and is now leading the series in contention for the £300 winners prize donated by Carbotech Ltd. Byron Hooper is hot on his heals just 3 points behind and David Hitchinson a further 1 point behind.
